A powerful tool called listening.

A powerful tool called Listening.

Why do we have such a hard time listening? Have you ever heard someone say “ you were hearing me but not listening to me?” Listening is a HUGE part of the meeting and developing a business relationship with someone will hopefully amount to a business lead or a business relationship which also leads to referrals.

So, how can you become a better listener? Here is what I do. First, when I meet someone I make sure my intentions are to get to know everything about them. I want to know how they got started in their business, why they are in the field they are in and what makes them love their job. I come up with questions that prompt lengthy answers. This helps me develop an understanding of this person and where I can bring value.

Next, I ask more personal questions, and not what you are thinking. I want them to think about themselves and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. What do they do well? What is their favorite part about their job? Once I gather all of this information I ask them about the struggles in their business. This is where it can get tricky and you need to pay attention and listen.

Most of the time after I ask that question I get this response, “ My business is the best-kept secret in town.” At first glance, this might seem funny or a positive thing but in reality, it is not. Their business deserves to be seen and heard, and that’s when I get very excited! I tell them about Holmes and that we specialize in helping take your business to the next level. We make sure every business story is told in a way that is personal to them. We create a marketing strategy that can reflect tangible results!

I am not trying to sell you on my business. What I am trying to do is show you how the flow of conversation can go from an introduction to questions, then to answers, and ultimately a solution. Not every conversation needs a solution of, “you need this service, and here’s why.” They might just need to get to know you as a person first and go from there.

To sum it all up… you need to make sure you are listening and not just hearing or waiting for your turn to speak. Listen, obtain any applicable information and then go from there. Your potential clients are worth being listened to, so be sure to listen!
